MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
This standard provides the mixing instructions for Buffalo Patch Mortars; 411B.

STORAGE
DRY MORTAR Dry Buffalo Patch® Mortars should be stored on pallets in a dry location where temperatures can be kept between 40°F and 90°F (5°C and 30°C). If the pallets are covered with plastic sheeting or tarps, ventilation is required in order to prevent condensation. Warm storage is recommended in extreme cold conditions. Due to pressure and settlement in storage, it is possible for the materials to become compacted. These lumps can readily be broken down by hand. Do not use materials that can not be readily broken down by hand.

EQUIPMENT
A standard mortar mixer is recommended. All mixing equipment must be clean and dry. Contaminants, such as Portland cement or refractory castables, can adversely affect the physical and bonding characteristics of Buffalo Patch Mortars

MIXING
DRY MORTAR Installers- check bag weights and calculate water requirements prior to start of mixing. Use only clean, fresh potable water with a pH between 6 and 8. Warm mixing water, with a temperature between 80°F and 90°F (25°C and 30°C), is preferred. Mixing water should be accurately weighed or measured. Refer to the chart provided below for water requirements.
CONSISTENCY Water Addition Wt%
Regular Trowel 13 - 16
Very Thin Dipping or Thin Surface Coating 28 - 30

Mix until the mortar is uniform. Total mixing time should not exceed five minutes. For best results, allow mixed mortar to age for four hours prior to using, then re-mix until the mortar is uniform. Total mixing time should not exceed three minutes.

CAUTION The following will adversely affect the density, strength and setting properties of Buffalo Patch Mortars:

• Dirty and/or hot water • Cement contamination • Excessive water • Dirty mixing equipment

Curing Time: Buffalo Patch contains a sodium silicate binder.  As a result, curing time and rate are not as critical as some other products. Normal curing procedure should allow for initial warm room temperature drying of 24 hours, then gradual increased temperature.  Cold temperatures will retard the setting process. Never heat at a rate that will produce steam.
