The cupel mirror has a long lightweight handle which allows the polished mirror surface to be held over the cupels in the oven to monitor the progress. This is especially helpful with deep bowl cupels, larger furnaces, and when you want to remove cupels at precisely the moment the process is completed (when the cupels "blick").
